ARGUMENT #13 of 30 for you to sign SB 840

SB 840 is Pro-Life!

I don't know about you, Governor, but I'm tired of these "Christian" fanatics, whose main motivation seems to be revulsion at sex and fear of women's autonomy, calling themselves "PRO-LIFE"---in essence implying that worldly pro-choice people like you and I are ANTI-life.

Naturally these folks comprise a large chunk of your Republican base, a chunk which you obviously need to cater to on occasion. But rather than your seasonal embrace of their annual efforts to chip away at women's rights (Prop. 72 and its zombie reincarnations), you really should make the case that by signing SB 840 you are saving the lives of many more fetuses & babies than their efforts ever will.

Because it's true: a report compiled by the US-based "Save the Children" shows that our nation has nearly the highest rate of infant mortality of all industrialized nations-second only to Latvia. As the study notes, "The lack of national health insurance and short maternity leaves in the US can lead to poor healthcare before and during pregnancy, increasing risks for premature births and low birth weight, which are the leading causes of newborn death in industrialized countries." And this, among other things, is exactly what SB 840 is designed to fix-prenatal care and preventive care are two of its hallmarks.

Would there be more abortions under SB 840? Maybe, but would that be balanced off by more mothers feeling comfortable carrying a child to term? I imagine so. Why don't you put someone on the job figuring that out? Why do I have to always do all your work for you? SB 840 is pro-life in many ways-get that across to the "pro-life" people, sign the bill, and forget about this parental notification nonsense which is just going to hurt young women!

Sincerely,

Vern Nelson, (714) 235-VERN
