ARGUMENT #10 of 30 for you to sign SB 840

It is not well-known, but the original screenplay for "Jingle All the Way" was much more somber and topical than the well-known holiday romp we all know and love;  it was changed drastically by the studio for commercial reasons, and to avoid angering the health insurance industry. In short, the man above is desperately trying to get the last FREE toy for his beloved son at a charity function. Earlier in the year he had gone bankrupt, lost his home and everything he owned, because of his wife's ovarian cancer---making him just one more of the TWO MILLION Americans who go bankrupt each year due to illness--- 200,000 in California alone! Like the majority of the others, he had insurance when the illness struck, but as the years of treatment went by, the policy covered less and less, the premiums skyrocketed, and after missing one payment he was dropped and was never able to obtain coverage again due to his wife's "pre-existing condition." After his failure to obtain the free toy, his wife's tragic death on Christmas day itself, a nd a brief but disturbing sequence where he contemplates committing acts of terrorism, the character joins his local chapter of Healthcare For All California where he puts all his considerable energy into trying to pass SB 840 so that nothing like this happens to anyone else.

In sadness and disappointment… but perpetual hope,
